The Estate Matchmaker | Daily Reader

Here at Smokingpipes, we believe in second chances. That's why we currently have over 1,400 estate pipes, each restored by our expert restoration team. We've published many articles over the years covering Estate Pipes, like the why and how, along with looking into how our estate crew manages to do such an excellent job. But today we're not here to re-tread old ground. We're going to make the assumption that you're familiar with the concept of estate pipes. No, today, dear reader, we're doing a selection of estate pipe personal ads in hopes of marrying the perfect pipe to its forever home.

Are you unfamiliar with personal ads? Back before they became mostly relegated to Craigslist, personal ads were put out in newspapers giving some form of description of the writer or something that might endear one to them along with some way to contact them. We suppose in the modern day that a dating app is a form of personal ad, but that's a side point. We have a lovely selection of singles for you today, so without further fanfare, meet bachelorette number one.

Bachelorette One: Weber Smooth Bent Dublin (A)

"I'm a Bent Dublin distinguished by a sweeping gesture, with the heel and base of my stummel possessing a spoon-like figure. Placed in the center of my figure is a robust, flaring bowl, the rim of which is wrapped in a crisp beadline. My back is an upturned shank and gracefully arcing saddle stem; this arrangement grants me a fluid profile. I'm dressed in a warm, smooth finish that highlights lovely birdseye across my right flank. In lieu of my company's typical cursive logo inside of an oval, the Weber name is stamped here in print style making me a stand out as one-of-a-kind."

Bachelorette Two: Michal Novak Smooth Freehand

"I hail from the Czech Republic in Central Europe and possess a highly expressive style that's steeped in organicism. I'm easily recognized by my use of pronounced, free-flowing ridges, with a design cue found in my carver Michal Novak's more classically inclined pieces. My hefty, towering figure fills your palm effortlessly with a bowl that stands with a forward-urging posture. My strapping physique is formed by muscular, insulating walls that display a Dublin-like flare as they reach from the rounded heel toward my craggy, plateau-capped rim, housing an exceptionally deep chamber for lengthy all-night smoking sessions. I inherited my carver's characteristic style with my bowl being wrapped in a series of undulating ridges that flow from the rim into a compact shank out back, which then pairs to a downturned saddle stem. My stummel wears a fetching chestnut stain that reveals lively vertical grain across the briar's expansive surface."

Bachelorette Three: Steve Morrisette Smooth Blowfish with Boxwood (2014)

"First impression? I offer an impressively complex sense of line readily apparent in my shape; even at a passing glance, my shank showcases an expressive, remarkably firm, and utterly geometric look thanks to its number of framing ridgelines. My shank flares out of a wide transition, expanding toward a trim fitment of boxwood, something which the base of my stem mirrors before dipping into a sleek saddle bit. This mirrored set of accents draws the eye slightly away from my bowl, creating an area of negative space that allows the visual weight to sit close to the transition. My bowl here features a rounded build across the left flank and a structured panel on the right, with my midsection lined by a pair of ridges that additionally frame my chamfered rim. A pale, round accent on the left flank of my bowl is inlaid with a shimmering material reminiscent of mother of pearl, with all the accenting work here contrasting the warm stain dressing the stummel."

Bachelorette Four: Scott Klein Smooth Tomato with Bamboo (2014)

"One look at me and you understand how I command the room. The first thing you might have noticed about this fiery Tomato is how squat my bowl is, presenting with under an inch and a half of height and holding a shallow but broad chamber within thick walls, the plumpness of my mid-set waistline allowing for the fingers to easily wrap around it comfortably. The heel which my bowl stands upon is subtly lifted, thrusting its curves into prominence, and the transition which builds at the aft is rather sharp, owing this to the extremely trim length of shank that's here been kicked up quite high to poise an acrobatic length of three knuckles of bamboo. My knuckles' natural rhythm is continued through the flared base of the saddle stem, the bit that leaps out afterward taking a demure downturn for an elegant posture overall and lending the combination a touch of extra verticality. Throughout my figure, there is a consistent feeling of fluidity, and the way that the high-reaching profile sweeps into my bowl upholds this, as if my carver Scott Klein somehow combined the organic look of a tree branch with the fluid properties of a babbling brook. I'm dressed here in a warm mahogany stain that reveals my straight and flame grain wrapping the bowl, the underside peppered with birdseye, and whose hues are both contrasted and complemented by the darker coloration of the bamboo."

Bachelorette Five: Nørding Carved Horn

"I stand apart from the crowd with a highly stylized and whimsical interpretation of the Horn from my carvers at Nørding. My bowl stands upright, its walls flaring gradually from the sweeping heel toward the flat rim. A muscular shank makes a seamless transition from my bowl and joins to a downturned saddle stem with a trio of plump expansion rings fashioned at its base. Owing to my shank's and stem's languid posture, I'm well-suited to comfortable clenching. Completing my unique figure is a rich, ruby-hued stain, dressing my stylized and carved surface. Defined by a series of deeply carved channels from rim to shank end, my stummel here boasts a stimulating textural experience."

Bachelorette Six: Soren Smooth Freehand Sitter

"I take after Søren's whimsical, free-flowing shaping with strong stylization. My bowl's rotund figure is formed by thick walls traveling from a crisp ridgeline at the base and curving toward the craggy rim, with a broad, flat heel fashioned at the fore of the bowl upon which I can sit stably. A muscular shank emerges from my bowl's transition and flares toward a plateau-capped face at the shank end, where it accepts a demurely curved tapered stem with a broad expansion ring at its base. Dressing my stummel is a smooth chestnut stain that displays handsome grain throughout."

Bachelorette Seven: Moretti Collection Smooth Volcano (δδδδ) (1) (2018)

"I flip the world upside down with my style. Moretti made me by flipping the traditionally oriented briar plateau along the rim on its head. I'm a stolid Volcano shape that features plateau along my broad base. Though craggy and uneven, my heel still allows me to sit upright, the flanks tapering dramatically toward the rim. With plenty of chamber depth, flame grain, and sturdy-sitting convenience, I'm a lovely desk pipe candidate."

    • @Duke Agree. This is like the bloopers night of American Idol auditions. I love the concept, and I enjoyed watching the ugly ones trying to get through the evening gown portion of the competition! Now let's go browse all the estate pipes for some real beauties!

    • Bachelorette 1 reminds me of Jiminy Cricket's top hat. With her unpretentious-but-respectable Weber background, she's the Eliza Doolittle of this group.
