12 New Castello

12 New Castello
For today's update we're presenting a full dozen gorgeous Castello briars in a mix sandblasted, rusticated, and of course a smooth finish, including one of their unique partially-rusticated bent brandy compositions. While every one of these are excellently executed from rim to bit, the two which have become my fast favorites are the first two dublins, being a Collection Occhio Di Pernice and a "Castello". Both blend perfectly graceful stems into strong, deep, yet poised transitions, yet each takes a different direction in treating the bowl. The Occhio is sturdy and bold, hardly tapered at all and sporting an English cross-grain, while the latter flowers outward in a flaring taper, making the most of its wild and dense flame grain.

9 New Radice Pipes

9 New Radice Pipes
Along with a lovely virgin apple and a number of beautiful billiards, today's Radice selection goes a bit heavy on the straight bulldog/rhodesian renditions. Along with a pair of Luigi's Classic "35" straight bulldogs (one smooth, one rusticated), there are two novel "low-top" rhodesians up for grabs. The first presents the stem, shank, and lower bowl of your well-known, and well-loved neoclassical Radice in Rind rustication, but with a shortened, smooth-polished upper portion, marking a bold contrast. The second is a phenomenally chubby composition, on par with the "Rubens" briars Luigi shaped from a Pease/DiPiazza design in limited edition, yet again with a chopped top, giving the stout pipe something of a shared aesthetic with heavily customized 1940s hot-rods.

48 New Savinelli Pipes

48 New Savinelli Pipes
We hope you like Dry Systems, because today's marching column's-worth of Savinellis includes a bakers dozen plus 1. Filling out the ranks are also quite a number of Venezias, complimented by a variety of Giottos, Nonpareils, Baronets, Aurelias, even a few Favorites, and more, and more. "Selection" seems to be the watchword for the day, and with a grand total of forty-eight, a full four-dozen of these popular Italian briars, there's certainly plenty of it.

48 New Peterson Pipes
From classic System pipes in both Smooth and Ebony finishes to a handful of Specialty Series pipes and churchwardens, today's Peterson update is another testament to this manufacturer's dynamic ingenuity and eclectic range of quality smoking appliances. With 145 years in business, and at a production rate of 2,000 pipes made each week, it's no wonder why Peterson continues to sit pretty as a titan of the industry; these beauties fly right off the virtual shelf.

18 New Estate Pipes

18 New Estate Pipes
Heading the estates for tonight might just be the Jacono 20th anniversary dublin. This pipe is a real beauty and even comes in a presentation box. Other notables are a Peter Heeschen sail, Johs billiard, and freehand from Pipe Dan. The miscellaneous section has a true gourd calabash and two meerschaum pipes; but the French also chime in with 3 nice pieces. Perhaps the closest competition to the Jacono is the 1993 Dunhill Christmas pipe that is still unsmoked and resting cozily in its leather-bound book.

New Cigars

New Cigars
One of our newest brands, My Father, is being introduced here for the first time in four sizes. These are great full-bodied smokes with Nicaraguan fillers and binder, plus a delicous Ecuadorian Habano-Rosado wrapper. In tonight's update we also have Quorum cigars, which have always been a popular seller in our store, and on our site. Thankfully, they recently came out with a delicious Connecticut-Shade wrapper for those who prefer a milder smoke.

New Lampe Berger

New Lampe Berger
It's been some time since our last addition from the Lampe Berger line of odor-eliminators and fragrance emitters. Today that is rectified with our introduction of both a new fragrance as well as an entirely new model of Lampe Berger. The fragrance is the Escale Caraibes (Caribbean Tonic), a light and breezy blend of lime, mint, and spice, as inspired by the Cuban Mojita cocktail (and sure to keep the lady of the house happier than the scent of any Syrian blend, no matter how well aged). As for the lamp, it's the Barque Rouge, meaning "Red Boat", a stout, crescent-shaped, stoneware number featuring an intensely red, crackled enamel "deck".

New Ashtrays & Accessories

New Ashtrays & Accessories
We here at the Smokingpipes.com offices play a perpetual game of a sort of spin-off of Chinese checkers with the cleaning staff which comes in every weekend, wherein our goal is to keep an ashtray always handy at our desks, while theirs is to redistribute them to other, seemingly random flat surfaces and/or entirely different rooms. It will likely surprise many of you that we do somehow manage to maintain a sufficient shortage of ashtrays within the office to keep this game going, yet that we do. However stimulating it may be to spend at least part of every Monday wandering room to room looking for somewhere to tap out a pipe or rest a cigar (and maybe possibly lifting it from another's desk if their back is turned), there's no need for you to engage in such bracing sport inside your own house. At least, that is, not with today's update, introducing a number of new ashtrays, as well as a really choice hydrometer for your humidor.

6 New Pipes from Tom Eltang

6 New Pipes from Tom Eltang
Tom Eltang is something of an institution unto himself. Hardworking, prolific, energetic, and remarkably talented, Tom makes a lot of pipes (by artisinal handmade standards) and they're almost never available. Before this batch of six pipes, we had three pipes of Tom's on the website. This is pretty typical, perhaps even more than normal. Tom's work is just enormously popular, far more popular than he, working alone and carefully as he does, could make pipes to satisfy. These six pipes, three smooth, one blast, two rusticated, represent quite a range of his work. Of course, you'll have to act quickly. Tom's pipes never stick around!

3 New Tsuge Pipes

3 New Tsuge Pipes
Tsuge Ikebana. I remember the hushed tones in which those words were uttered when I first started in the pipe business in the late 1990s. Undeniably special, Tsuge's top pipes, just 250 or 300 per year, have long commanded respect, awe, and love in American pipe smokers and collectors. I also remember the first time I went to Japan and visited Tsuge in 2002. I was so nervous, desperately trying not to show how nervous I was, and incredibly excited to be in this almost holy place of pipe creation. Of course, over the years since then, I've visited perhaps fifteen times, gotten to know the folks there well and we've had almost 2,500 Tsuges come through our doors, of which perhaps 800 have been Ikebanas. Knowing them, though, while reducing the mystique ever so slightly, diminishes not at all the reverence in which I hold them. These are extraordinary pipes made by extraordinary gentlemen.

6 New Ardor Pipes

6 New Ardor Pipes
Fans of Ardor's "Giant" line of cyclopean briars will be pleased today. Normally we only include one in each update, but this time around we managed to shoe-horn a second example in, and it's even bigger than the first. In fact, these are the same two over-sized briars I was using to test the mettle of Vauen's magnetic pipe stands from Monday's update. Though there are other marques which make briars of a similar scale, most are high-priced pieces which appear more suited for displaying grain pattern than for actually smoking. But Ardor Giants, with their immense chambers and bowls shaped perfectly to be cradled in hand, are unmistakably fashioned to be used, and enjoyed.

9 New Ser Jacopo Pipes

9 New Ser Jacopo Pipes
As much as we've all enjoyed the many Picta-heavy updates of late, today we're going with a more even split between Giancarlo's offerings, with four Pictas and five from his standard lines. "Standard", of course, is a relative term, as Ser Jacopo has some of the most instantly recognizable shaping and finishes in the Italian school. (The lengthy Ser Jacopo calabash-curve seen on dublins and horns is certainly unmistakable.) One benefit to a more mixed selection is, as I'm sure you fans of larger briars will be glad to hear, that it gives us a chance to toss in a few "Maximas", which aren't available in the Picta series. This week it's a big honkin' rhodesian 2x, and for anyone who feels that's still just not enough pipe, we're backing it up with a 4x bent egg.

5 New Il Duca Pipes

5 New Il Duca Pipes
Shaping wood in one form or another since the age of 14, Massimiliano Rimensi displays an amazing versatility in his pipe-making. Danish, Italian, English, freehand, sculptural, or any hybridization imaginable, and he would appear to pull it off every bit as well as those who specialize in the given form. This always makes for a varied and interesting selection, not to mention the frequent appearance of entirely novel combinations and variations. He also produces an unusually high ratio of briars in the typically rare virgin finish, as seen today where three of our five offerings come in an au naturel sandblast.

6 New Winslow Pipes

6 New Winslow Pipes
Though only a single briar in today's Winslow update breaks the $150 price point (and that one being an immense "Ekstra Giant"), these are some of the best compositions I've seen from Poul yet. From the intensely smoky look of the squat, bent tomato to the blend of sharp angularity and flourishing lines of one freehand dublin, and the perfectly smooth, floral flow of a second, all show a magnificent selection of grain, creative design, and the rewards of well-practiced shaping. At a half-dozen count, this batch may be modest in size, but in terms of sheer concentration of quality it's one of the best I've seen yet.

12 New Brebbia Pipes

12 New Brebbia Pipes
Though they originally began manufacturing pipes for Savinelli, Brebbia long ago set out on its own, developing a unique and unmistakable aesthetic. With their novel, at times eccentric shaping, all-natural vegetable-based finishes, and often colorful compositions, Brebbia briars stand out in any collection. It's hardly a surprise they're one of our most reliable sellers, bearing those qualities and the individuality which tend to produce a loyal following.

12 New Luciano Pipes
Though G.L. Pease is best known for his tobaccos (and his briar collection), he's also collaborated on pipe designs with some very popular results. In fact, the bulk of today's batch is from the Pease/DiPiazza series of designs. Some of you may already be familiar with the incredibly stout Pease/DiPiazza's that have been produced by Luigi Radice in limited numbers, and though most of these also follow a compact aesthetic, it isn't to near the degree of the Radices. There's even a bit of a black sheep, in the form of a low-slung but highly refined rhodesian, sporting an almost saucer-like bowl and a remarkably delicate shank and stem.

24 New Stanwell Pipes
Today's Stanwell update features another batch of the very cool, vintage-looking "1960" series. These shapes, probably having been designed originally by the Danish master Sixten Ivarsson, are delicate and attractive both in form and aesthetic. It goes without saying that we have a tough time keeping these in stock, so if you're considering picking one up, now is the time to do so. Also, we're featuring a handful of Featherweights and Colonials to round out this Thursday's offering. Take a look!

70 New Estate Pipes

70 New Estate Pipes
There is nothing shy of a great variety for tonight, for sure. Heading the Danish category are two S.Bang pipes; one is a voluptuous tomato, and the other is a very small (but lovely) pot. Hans 'Former' Nielsen made a gorgeous ring-grain freehand that has remained unsmoked (also the case with the Bangs). Fans of older Stanwell pipes should be on the lookout for a large billiard and a small Sixten-inspired smooth. W.O. Larsen is represented by three brandy shapes; one smooth, one partially blasted, and one exquisite ring grain. Peter Heeschen followers can have a second chance on an (S)-grade signature shape that really makes us wish he would stamp it (S)(S)(S) - it's great. The two stunners in the American category are a Will Purdy 007-ish shape, and a Trever Talbert "Moebius Bolus", plus a Chicago-made Cellini that had Adam scratching his head over which country it should be in. As always, the English section has a smattering of Dunhills; Ireland is replete with Petersons; and the Italian section is well-stocked with Castellos, Savinellis, Cavicchi, and other famous brands.
